Portfolio Website

Description

This was my first attempt at creating my own personal portfolio website. After trying to use online tools like Wix and SquareSpace I realized that I wanted to implement certain elements in the site that I couldn’t with the mentioned solutions so I decided to give web dev a try. I knew it was going to be challenging and so I promised myself that if I could have a basic website up and running in a day, I’d try to dive deeper into the world of Front-end development.

The result you’re seeing was achieved in 1 month of development following a very good and well structured Youtube channel called Kevin Powell .
I personally enjoyed styling my website and seeing the results immediately on my browser and at the end of it I publish it using Netfliy as a hosting service provider.

Limitations and Why I switched

During the inital stages of development I took a gamble and made the decision of working primarly on making sure that the website would work on Desktop screen. This meant that navigation and responsiveness were put to the side to speed up production. Not to mention the additional level of complexity it would’ve added on top of learning HTML/CSS and JS from scratch. The justifcation for this was based on the assumption that recruiters and people from the industry would mostly look at it from a desktop screen. However as time went on I was proven wrong in multiple occasions. Seeing how I didn’t want to risk getting rejected on a technicality I opted for a more flexible alternative…

Hugo and Static Site Generators

Static site generators were exactly what I was looking for, offering both a ready to use framework that’s already responsive but with the added benefit of being completely extensible. Despite the initial learning curve I was able to create a responsive website filled with my own content using Hugo as a static site generator and the Hugo Profile Theme
